Autumn is a great time to plant a variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowering plants in Melbourne. The cooler temperatures and increased rainfall help plants establish strong roots before winter. Here are some good options:

Vegetables

Leafy greens: Lettuce, spinach, kale, silverbeet, rocket

Brassicas: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts

Root vegetables: Carrots, beetroot, radish, turnips

Alliums: Garlic, onions, leeks

Legumes: Peas, broad beans

Herbs

Coriander

Parsley

Thyme

Oregano

Chives

Mint (best grown in a pot to prevent spreading)

Flowers & Ornamentals

Autumn bloomers: Marigolds, salvias, chrysanthemums

Winter-preparing flowers: Pansies, violas, snapdragons, primulas

Bulbs for spring flowers: Daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, jonquils

Fruit & Perennials

Strawberries (for harvest in spring)

Blueberries (establishing plants now for next season)

Rhubarb

Citrus trees (lemons, limes, oranges)
